Summary

A Christmas Carol is a novella by English author Charles Dickens。 It was first published by Chapman & Hall on 19 December 1843。 It tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation resulting from a supernatural visit by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come。

The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim。 The book was written and published in early Victorian era Britain, a period when there was strong nostalgia for old Christmas traditions together with the introduction of new customs, such as Christmas trees and greeting cards。 Dickens' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied, but are, principally, the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales。

A Christmas Carol is a play about a mean-spirited and selfish old man, Ebenezer Scrooge, who hates Christmas。 One cold Christmas Eve, Scrooge is unkind to the people who work for him, then refuses to give to charity, and then is rude to his nephew when he invites him to spend Christmas with him

The 19th century equivalent to the modern cheesy 'save Christmas' movies, but in its time undoubtedly a very telling and confrontational novel。 Contains some memorable quotes and some paragraphs of grand prose。 The 19th century equivalent to the modern cheesy 'save Christmas' movies, but in its time undoubtedly a very telling and confrontational novel。 Contains some memorable quotes and some paragraphs of grand prose。 。。。more

I've never read Dickens before, and I'm happy to say I enjoyed it。 Familiarity with the plot and supplementing my reading with an annotated version from my library probably helped。 Other than Scrooge's transformative journey, what I liked best about the story was the way Dickens's compassion for the plight of the poor, particularly children in poverty, came through。 I've never read Dickens before, and I'm happy to say I enjoyed it。 Familiarity with the plot and supplementing my reading with an annotated version from my library probably helped。 Other than Scrooge's transformative journey, what I liked best about the story was the way Dickens's compassion for the plight of the poor, particularly children in poverty, came through。 。。。more

I generally do not like classics。 I don’t enjoy the way they read, purely because of the old-fashioned ways of writing, which of course I can’t realistically fault。 However, A Christmas Carol is a classic I can always come back to。 The way it reads is interesting and engaging, and the narrator feels humane and likeable, while not taking away from the experience of the story。 As well as this, the many implicit and explicit themes and political statements allow you to not only enjoy an inspiring s I generally do not like classics。 I don’t enjoy the way they read, purely because of the old-fashioned ways of writing, which of course I can’t realistically fault。 However, A Christmas Carol is a classic I can always come back to。 The way it reads is interesting and engaging, and the narrator feels humane and likeable, while not taking away from the experience of the story。 As well as this, the many implicit and explicit themes and political statements allow you to not only enjoy an inspiring story, but also learn about the Victorian Era。 I definitely recommend it to anyone, even those who do not generally like classics, as I do not。 。。。more

Very classic story。 I’ve heard countless retellings over the years so it was fun to read the original。 I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Dickens writing。

I actually don’t think I’ve read this before! I’ve seen the play several times (and of course the muppet version that my brother in law is obsessed with) and you can see the differences between the two but generally I really enjoyed it。 It’s a story with good morals even for someone like me who hates Christmas and wishes people would be more thoughtful all year long。 Not super religious even though it is about Christmas。 Great book。 Don’t need to reread but I wouldn’t mind。 4。2 stars

I just finished A Christmas Carol, my very first Charles Dickens read! As a non-English speaker, I did not think the writing style was too difficult。 Sometimes descriptions were a little bit long-winded, and I lost track of where I was, but the vocabulary was easy enough to understand。I am in doubt whether this book for me is a 3 or 4*。 While I did like the writing style, I am not entirely convinced by the quick turn-around of Mr。 Scrooge, and how high on Christmas he was at the end。 I noticed s I just finished A Christmas Carol, my very first Charles Dickens read! One of my favourite books growing up, still as heartwarming as the first time I read it。 I re-read this every year, 10/10 comfort book。

Knew this wasn't going to be one of my like favorite books in the world, but wanted to try out more classics and this one was short, plus I'm sooooo ready for Christmas, so I thought "eh why not try it?" And let me tell you, I do not remember a single thing other than ending and I read this book in one sitting。 How the hell did I forget the whole book so fast? Idk, but i do remember thinking that it wasn't a bad book, just maybe not for me。 Knew this wasn't going to be one of my like favorite books in the world, but wanted to try out more classics and this one was short, plus I'm sooooo ready for Christmas, so I thought "eh why not try it?" Un clásico moralizante, entrañable, con una visión social aún vigente, entretenido para todas las edades。

Possibly my favourite book。 Yes, it's a moral tale but it can be read as more than that。 It's comforting, familiar and the Christmas season wouldn't be the same without it。 Redemption, love, forgiveness, charity to others and sharing of joy are surely what that holiday is about - regardless of religion。 Possibly my favourite book。 Yes, it's a moral tale but it can be read as more than that。 It's comforting, familiar and the Christmas season wouldn't be the same without it。 Redemption, love, forgiveness, charity to others and sharing of joy are surely what that holiday is about - regardless of religion。 。。。more
